Understanding Keton Status Measurement
What is keton?
Human body produces keton body as by-product when body fat lipolysis starts, and such state is called ketosis.
As body fat lipolysis progresses faster, keton body amount increases, so you can find out how fast body fat lipolysis occurs by measuring keton body amount inside your body.
How to measure keton?
Keton body is composed of 3 ingredients: acetone, β-hydroxybutyrate and acetoacetic acid.
Acetoacetic acid is measured with the method using urine and β-hydroxybutyrate is measured by extracting blood as measuring glycosuria.
Lastly, acetone has strong volatility and emitted as respiration gas, so it can be measured by extracting respiration of the examinee, and it is KETOSCAN’s keton amount measurement method.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of 3 keton measurement methods?
Acetoacetic acid measurement using urine test paper is low cost measurement method, but the result can be found only with keto stick color change, not reading, and change according to the urine discharge amount is very big, so it is difficult to measure quantitative keton status. Until now, blood using β-hydroxybutyrate measurement is most generalized and known to be the most direct way to find out keton status, but keton strip (measurement paper) is expensive, and most of all, the biggest disadvantage is that you have to get blood for every examination. Acetone measurement method has the advantage of very easy measurement like blowing into breathalyzer, but you need to detect very low concentration acetone (1/1,000,000, ppm), so it requires high level sensor technology, and it is the biggest reason for no-commercialization so far.
What does acetone reading mean?
Starting point of ketosis that human body starts to use body fat as main energy is from acetone 2 ppm, and at this time, body fat is known to be decomposed by about 1g per hour. As acetone concentration is higher, body fat lipolysis happens faster, but high is not always good, and the most optimal section for diet is 10~40 ppm. If it is higher than that, unnecessary keton is excessively accumulated in the body, which is not beneficial for human body, and in very high concentration of 60ppm or higher, if it is along with high glucose, there is also a danger of ketoacidosis, the value has to be adjusted.
